WIP update on my shawl

Unfinished knitted shawl held up across shoulders

Back in October, I showed you the early beginnings of a garter stitch shawl with a gorgeous cabled border of twisted ribbing. It’s time for an update.

I love bringing my knitting projects with me, where ever I go. The shawl WIP (work in progress) has been to Michigan and Brazil, and many a beach and cafe in California, and now it will be completed in Denmark.

I still have a while to go, but I’m getting there. Progress has been slow because I have been busy with preparations for an international move. I moved from California to Denmark a few days before Christmas. I’m still settling in, but hopefully I will have time to finish the shawl quickly so I’ll get to use it while it’s still winter.

Details of the shawl. I just love that beautiful border.

The Details

The Etude No 5 pattern is suited for an advanced beginner. The pattern is worked sideways, so it doesn’t require a particularly long needle. It’s a lot easier than it looks. You only have to pay attention when knitting the border, and there’s a YouTube video tutorial for how the border is done. Cables are pretty simple, once you get the hang of them, and this is a good pattern to try if you are new to cables. I would recommend making a couple of practice cables on a swatch before starting the pattern.

Proudly showing off progress to the ladies in my knitting group at the Yarn Shop Santa Cruz. I have altered the pattern a bit, leaving out rows in the middle because I didn’t have enough yarn.
